I'm legitimately gutted to even make this post, but I'm doing it because I know this is a community that will understand my pain. Last Friday, 1/23, at approximately 1:50pm EST, my Type S crossed over to the backroads in the sky. The driver of a Kia minivan failed to ensure that an intersection was clear when he pulled away from a stop sign. It happened so fast I didn't have time to react. All drivers-side airbags deployed and my car dialed emergency services. The final act of kindness from a car that I absolutely adored.
Guys, I'm okay. Outside of soreness/stiffness in my left shoulder and arm, no injuries to either party. The Kia driver was cited. His insurance has already totaled the car and frankly, they've been great to deal with so far. I'm even already working on sourcing a 2026 Type S. But since I'm among friends I'm not ashamed to admit... I'm not okay. I LOVED that car. I waited over five months to get the Tiger Eye. Having such a unique color on such an amazing car was a source of pride, even if my wife hated it. I once had someone pass me on the highway in the pouring rain just so he could roll his window down and take pictures of my car. In over two years of ownership, I hadn't cracked 18,000 miles, but every single one of those miles was spent driving as the car was intended to be driven. This loss hurts me in my soul. I keep flashing back to the split second just before impact, the ringing in my ears, the smell (and taste) of the airbag dust, and the feeling of despair once I realized what had just happened.
In the coming days, I'm expecting a phone call from a loss adjuster, who is inevitably going to offer me an insulting settlement and move right on with his day.
Anyway, view the pictures below at your own risk. I still have a hard time looking at them. (I also included the rain picture to remember happier times. My son tracked him down via Instagram tag on the back of his car.)
