Probably grabbing some Mcgard splinedrives... figured I'd post here to see if anyone has "strong" feedback in support of another option?

Project Kics seem to be popular, as do options from Atomic.

I bought a set of basic open-ended lugs from Apex when I bought my VS-5RS for $50 (on sale now for $40), they do the job.

I also bought a set of Project Kics Monolith when I bought my CE28Ns (should be on the car this week). For no other reason than aesthetics... and that extra degree of comfort knowing they'll be that much harder to steal. But they were $300.

It's all in what you want.

You dailied the Apex wheels, right? Did you have rust issues with the open-ended lugs?

Yep, and a bit. Nothing overwhelming but yeah they don't look brand new anymore by any stretch. I also did a shitload of autocross runs on them. They work, but that's about where I'd draw the line. Function over fashion.

Once it stops raining I can try to take a picture. They're on the car now.

No need. I don't want to deal with that, haha. It's gonna have to be closed for me. When are you putting your CE28s on? Did you pull the trigger on tires yet?

Yes- but it took a while for them to come in. I decided to lean in on the Bridgestone RE-71RZ despite the initial open-ended backorder status, but they ended up shipping about 12 days after I ordered, and arrived Thursday evening. They're at the shop waiting to be installed now, I should pick them up no later than Tuesday.

I think I won't be able to resist putting them on shortly after picking them up just to see what's up- but a lot will be dependent on schedule/weather/etc. Most likely though, next weekend is a good target.

Nice! Should be awesome, assuming they fill the shoes of their predecessor. Pics please when you get it all installed! CE28s are one of my favorites (and one of the few wheels that hold their own on this car in 18s, imo).

I have the project kics monolith and also purchased the end caps because I didn't want the exposed studs.

Ended up finding some Rays FN-IIs at a good price last night. They're the red cap variant. I'm not sure if the accents will look alright with the calipers / Type-S branding or if it will look tacky... price was right, though, and I like that they have the floating collar and that they're internal drive. 🤞

To use open end lug nuts if you drive in winter on salty roads.

Well if you live and/or park in a crappy neighborhood, I guess you have to do whatever necessary to keep wheels from being stolen. But I did Tech at many DE's for more than 10 years. Lost track of all the goofballs who showed up at an event with no idea where their special lug nut socket was.

And I've seen several locking lug nuts that stripped and couldn't be removed - requiring time consuming nasty work that often ended up scratching the wheel.

So from what I've seen, about the only people really impacted by special locking lug nuts are the OWNERS (not the thieves).

This is a legit gripe born from years of dealing with knuckleheads but... what can't be tracked easily is how many thieves skip cars that have wheel locks vs ones that don't. If you have $4000 wheels and live in an area where this type of shit is prevalent, it's kind of a no-brainer. You take your chances. My car is kept in my garage 99% of the time, but it's not impossible that I'll have to leave it overnight in a hotel parking lot or airport garage etc., and all I need is to come back to find it on cinder blocks.

I love the aesthetics of the Rays lugs, have them on my winter set up (as I still use the stock wheels/tires for summer). Unfortunately, two of my floating collars are cracked now (just realized when I switched to my summer set up last weekend). Not sure why, I didn't impact them on, I used a torque wrench set to the proper torque when I originally put them on and for one rotation over the winter. Luckily, the collars sit deep enough that you can't tell when they're on the car.

Was in the same boat, and FINALLY got mine so I could put my new CEs on. I like the lugs, they seem good so far. (Need to get my sidewalls dialed, I know)
