I wonder if auto Rev Match plays any role in the rev hang? I did have mine set off prior to the tune; just another data point. Likely just a placebo effect but I do recall the car *feeling* smoother/easier to drive with it off.

So I thought I was about to be smart, after having a read through various posts on here and civicxi, and that rev match is the culprit. Just turned it off (I am one of the few old farts that actually likes this feature)..... and no change lol.

I'm annoyed at this situation because it's the one piece of the puzzle remaining to make this car just about the most enjoyable DD I've owned. The overrevs really take away from that experience, for me.

Sounds like the only way is to go full throttle and shift at higher RPMs in the lower gears. I see this as an absolute win.

The obvious, lol. But that to me is not a solution, just a band aid. Obviously, it's the only apparent option I have, but isn't at all satisfactory to me.
Phearable touts rev hang disabled as one of the many features of their OTS map. Have you engaged them to better understand how they're defining 'rev hang' and what you're experiencing? It's worth a discussion, and perhaps the outcome could be a revision that solves this. I was out with the car earlier today, and I'm confident rev hang, as I have explained it above and experienced it, is completely gone from my OTS map, or at the very least, subtle.

Understood.

You could always find a much lighter flywheel and that could help with making the revs fall faster. Again, a bandaid to what you're looking for.

In an NA car i agree with wanting a fast throttle close, but on a turbo car there's some benefit to keeping the turbo spinning when off throttle to improve lag. Porsche does this more extremely in their sport+ setting on turbo models as I understand. You lose some engine braking that way. Ours isn't as bad, and the rev hang (rev it in neutral... How long does the needle "hang" before it comes down?) I'm feeling is nowhere near the full second hang I've seen in some other manual cars in the last 12 years.

To be clear, the revs are not hanging, they are overshooting. If they just hung around I'd be fine with it. For example, if I shift before redline at WOT or close to it, the overshoot in between the shift can be as high as 1.5k RPM.

Given the above, a lighter flywheel would actually exacerbate the issue. It's not a momentum problem, it's a throttle plate behavior problem. The ECU is intentionally letting in a burst of air to address any unburned fuel from the sudden throttle closure immediately after being high duty cycle on the injectors. That's the behavior I want to eliminate, and what I thought the tune addressed, but does not.

Lighter flywheel would lose speed faster, but yes also gain speed faster.

I get what you're after. I don't think you'll get to (or want to) that immediate throttle close you get on an NA, though. I know generally it can be tuned, so maybe a custom tune route and asking them to reduce the "throttle lift decay" or "throttle overrun" timing?

It does have more ramifications than just rpm change on a turbo car, though.

I've owned many a turbo BMW that does this perfectly. It's not a turbo vs NA thing, it's an emissions reduction strategy.

If you drive older turbo cars from the early 90's for example, they will not exhibit this behavior. Starting around the late 90's and into the 2000's, OEMs began implementing this strategy to beat tighter and tighter govt emissions regulations. Some brands found better solutions than others, so the severity varies wildly among OEMs.
