How to: MB Quart subwoofer upgrade + rear sound deadening (nice, yet inexpensive)

Thanks for the comprehensive guide, was able to tackle the subwoofer upgrade over the weekend. I probably should have done a comparison with stock before the upgrade since I can't tell if it was a big improvement over stock, maybe slightly? Can't complain since it only cost $60 and probably a bit more crisp.

Only difference I did was that I didn't cut the stock quick connectors and made a separate quick connect for a "Plug-in-play" can revert back to stock easier for whatever reason.

Nice! I wanted to but I didn't have the connectors for it and the pogo pins made it unnecessary. You wired the other voice coil, right?

Yeah I did, just didn't take a picture of it. I only made the quick connect just in case if I have to switch back to stock, I wouldn't have to resolder the connectors again.

Just curious what happens if you don't reduced the subs down to 2ohms, would it just make the amp run hotter?

It's not dangerous (if anything it's safer), but it will also make the speaker quieter and might change the tone of the sound depending on the kind of amp it is.

I would have to agree with such a small difference with the Rockford $200 sub your route is way more reasonable

The rf sub was a big difference for me. Granted I also added stuffing, killed the resonant parts of the box, and also sealed the hatch area around the sub. Tuned in and a high quality source works quite well now. I can actually feel the bass. The only thing I might do is an inline amp so I can turn down some of the eq. The benefit of the aftermarket subs is that you can easily stick a sizable amp in and it'll take it. Oem is likely 50w peak. It's a very cheap/junky thing. Almost anything short of a paper plate would be an improvement.

thats good you got great results but it was a collection of all the things you've done. i only swapped the sub at first. and the change was "noticeable" but not worth $200 in parts i would say. i sound deadened by trunk area not too long ago as long as my flooring and the overal road noise has gone down so much that i normally cruise with volume 15-20. now im doing like 12.

All you really need is 1-3 and 7. Realistically you just need 1 and 2 if you have the rest of the parts just laying around.

I made quick connects since I didn't want to clip stock connectors but it's not really needed if you have no intention of ever going back to stock.

I just picked up this same sub and was thinking of adding .25+lb of poly-fill for it in this enclosure looking at the specs it should benefit from it... Any one done this yet?

I have. Takes more fill than you'd think.

Result was good, but I did it in conjunction with deadening the case and some sealing. It adds a bit more depth than just the sub and all it costs is an old pillow my wife overlooks.
