I recently installed the Takeda intake and ran an experiment using different sealing techniques on the evaporation purge port, which is pictured below.

This sensor system is very sensitive to the quality of the seal... Any minute leakage and the P04F0 code gets thrown. Takeda has begun manufacturing a new tube that uses a more OEM like captured o ring seal, while the original version uses the foam gasket that you see pictured below (I have the older foam gasket version).

The foam gasket works fine IF you install it correctly. It's got a slightly larger radial thickness than the channel in the Takeda rotomolded tube, which is a design flaw IMO. You need to ensure that the entire adhesive surface is fully seated in the tube channel, with no portion caught on the inner or outer walls of the channel thereby leaving a tunnel underneath the gasket for air to pass through. With a proper install, you should not get codes.

I also experimented using o rings (in place of the foam gasket) of differing thicknesses and they worked until I used an o ring that was too thick, which resulting on the factory plastic port assembly bending just enough around the o ring to cause a leak, and threw the code. If you want to go the O ring route on the original style part, don't go thicker than 3mm, ideally with 28mm ID and 34mm OD.

The foam doesn't run this risk as it compresses completely without deforming the factory port assembly. But again, it needs to be installed fully seated into the channel to prevent the "tunnel" leakage mode.

Thanks for sharing this. I don't have a ton of spare time at the moment, but I will experiment with it too and see if I can eliminate it completely. I know changing fuel helped a lot, but this is certainly worth a try.

Note how on the 5 o'clock and 11 o'clock positions the gasket is not fully seated in the channel groove. I believe this is what causes the error code.

Update: even with the careful installation of the foam gasket, I started to get the dreaded error code on a regular basis. So I went overboard with a nuclear option!

I ordered some black gasket maker and after removing the foam gasket completely, I took one of the nitrile O rings I have previously tried as a sealing solution and layered some gaskter maker, then the O ring, then more gasket maker on top and installed the factory evap vent assembly while the gasket maker was still uncured, ensuring a total seal.

At the same time, I applied gasket sealant evenly with my finger around the inner surface of where the MAF sensor installs in the Takeda rotomolded tube, but this time I let it cure before installing the MAF. Why did I do this? I found that the surface of the rotomolded tube is generally not flat, which could have also been contributing to a small leak. Thinking about it, the leak does not have to be around the Evap purge unit to cause the error. By applying the gasket maker, the surface becomes flatter as well as pliable, which theoretically should give the MAF o ring the best chance of an airtight seal.

So far, no codes. Will report back after a week or if I throw another code, in which case I will conclude that the AFE is just a bad design that can't be remedied (we're not there yet).

No codes thrown so far. I think I found and fixed the issue (watch, now it will happen lol).

I take that back. Got the dreaded code again even after applying the sealant. I now feel confident this is a more fundamental design issue, likely with the size of the intake tube and possibly also the relative location of the evap passages.

I asked AFE to send me the new tube under the TSB and they did send a new tube, but it looks identical to the old one. No new sealing system etc. Rather than deal with their shoddy customer service I am just going to toss it.

I went back to the OE intake with PRL hoses and K&N filter and it feels more torquey down low. This could be related to the intake tube diameter being different (the ECU would be tuned to a specific air speed to mass relationship, which is determined by the diameter).

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THE TAKEDA INTAKE.


Edit 6/26/26: AFE fixed my problem completely - see my updated post!

I know this is old but was this question ever answered? Ordered infinity intake and inlet and just trying to make sure I have everything lined up before it arrives

Man that GruppeM intake is gorgeous. The red engine bay accent matching the brake calipers would be a nice touch. I just don't want to be the guinea pig to try it on a De5...

There's been a handful of De5s with the GruupeM/Blitz intake. You just have to trim the duct that goes over the ECU for it to fit the DE5.
