Hey everyone,

My 2024 Integra Type S makes a high-pitch, whistling-like noise when I coast up to red lights or stop signs while in gear. The sound disppears when on the throttle (even slightly) or when I apply the brakes.

I cannot tell where the sound is coming from. Also, I only hear it when the windows are down and no music is playing. The sound is not particularly loud or ear-piercing, but it is fairly easy to hear under the aforementioned conditions (windows down, no music).

Do any of you have an idea of what this could be? I'm wondering if some aspect of the drivetrain is lacking lubrication somewhere, or perhaps, it's a brake issue? The noise makes me think two metal pieces are subtly rubbing together somewhere.

Just wanted to ask about this before I take it to the dealer. FWIW, the car drives just fine other than this noise.

Thanks in advance, everyone. Cheers.

Yesss... Search "wastegate rattle" here and the ctr forums.

Odd wastegate design and it sits under the hood opening so nothing to insulate the noise.

Mine has been doing it since day 1. There's also a related rattle when you're in the other end of wastegate positioning, which occurs more in winter/cold.

The wastegate issue is when you're on like 1/4 throttle, not while coasting. I'd fail to see how it could possibly be a wastegate noise if you're completely off throttle. Unless I'm missing something.

This sounds like the "rocks stuck in the dust shield" issue... but that should go away after a while. Has it been happening for a while? You could try driving semi-aggressively (within reason, taking all legal and safety measures into account), or some people have claimed to reverse and brake suddenly to clear out any debris that may have gotten stuck. It's happened to me several times at this point, but does eventually go away- usually pretty quickly, within 20 minutes or so of driving.

Another thought is it might be time for brakes. How many miles are on your car? And do you do any aggressive driving without turning the traction control completely off (i.e., "pedal dance", VSA disabled)?

In any case, if it isn't the rock/debris in heat shield issue then the dealer is your move- although I'd set expectations low.

There's a lot more out there about it.

There's a buzzy rattle from the wastegate when it's actively flapping to regulate pressure and there's a whistling noise that persists when off throttle. The latter I believe is related to the valve arm design.

It's not a rock if it goes away when adding throttle. Though this car is definitely prone to rocks/debris

Same here in my ASpec. When letting off of the throttle in any gear I get a faint whistle/rattle but goes away upon throttle input. Annoying but just chalked it up as a quirk at this point :/

Agree with this. My car has had the exact same symptom since new and I was pointed towards the wastegate rattle. As soon as I gave the wastegate linkage a jiggle it was obvious that it’s bouncing around when not under any load. If it wasn’t directly over the turbo I’d just hit it with some thick grease. I haven’t looked closely enough to see if there’s another way to quiet it down.

Hey Optronix,

I have about 7,000 miles on the car, but I don't do much spirited driving except for hitting a local back road (probably no more than 1/2 mile worth of road) once a week or so. I don't mess with the VSA either.

And yes RE: dealers--my expectations will be quite low.

Much thanks, Underdog, SeanIsElsewhere, and VictorOfHavoc. I'll look to see if Optronix has more to add based on my reply to his follow-up question, but until then, I'll dig through this FL5 thread.

some people have fixed their wastegate rattle on other car forums by adding a spring
