Hello all,

Who has achieved a nice turbo "whoosh" noise that can be heard in the cabin with windows up?

I was thinking about ordering these 4 updrades, would this do the trick or does anyone have other recommendations?

high volume air intake - https://prlmotorsports.com/en-ca/pr...ume-intake-system?_fid=36b240db6&_pos=2&_ss=c
inlet pipe kit - https://prlmotorsports.com/en-ca/pr...r-inlet-pipe-kit?_pos=10&_fid=ec3274cfd&_ss=c
intercooler - https://prlmotorsports.com/en-ca/pr...ercooler-upgrade?_pos=11&_fid=ec3274cfd&_ss=c
charge pipe kit - https://prlmotorsports.com/en-ca/pr...pipe-upgrade-kit?_pos=12&_fid=ec3274cfd&_ss=c

You don't need all of that to achieve the desired results. An aftermarket intake will likely get you what you need. If the intake isn't enough for you, reassess and take the next step. Use a scalpel, not a sledgehammer.

In fairness, he did link the PRL intake and inlet...

But yes, an intake/inlet should get you there. I don't see how an intercooler will affect turbo noises at all, honestly. And it's been documented pretty strenuously how the PRL intercooler in particular can lead to overheating in track use.

I snagged a prl intake for this reason. Turbo noises activated!

intake is step 1...
...T51R mod is step 2.

Usually, people have this done to aftermarket turbos, but recently, someone had the mod done to their stock FL5 turbo:

RV6 also sells a turbo with an anti-surge / T51R mod already done, but it's a huge turbo (relative to this platform), and it probably isn't what most owners of this platform are looking for.

Thoughts on the PRL intake and inlet? Not the right choice?

You have the prl intake by itself without the inlet kit? How is the turbo noise with windows up?
Yep! only the intake. I can hear the turbo noises loud and clear with the windows up.

My personal choice was the Infinity Design, but the PRL is by all means not a bad choice. In fact, it's probably the smartest buy of all the options out there. Tons of people have it with no issue, I just really liked the Infinity Design.

Hey regarding this - was the conclusion the PRL intercooler was actually worse than OEM or just still not good enough for some people's track days? Or actually causing some other issue?

The PRL intercooler does a better job as an intercooler than the OEM unit in terms of IATs and maintaining stock or modified power levels. The stock unit heat soaks faster and has worse heat-soaked steady state performance. This is aside from engine cooling performance, which is a separate issue but potentially impacted by a larger, thicker IC like the PRL unit.

I somewhat agree with this take- technically it's "better" at being an intercooler than OEM, but when you look at the overall function of what you're using the car for IMHO it's a worse option than OEM for all use cases other than those going after big power. There's an argument to be made for the "heat soak" issue, but there are probably far more efficient ways to correct that problem without the compromise (or cost) upgrading the intercooler introduces. And I haven't really run into any noticeable issues with heat soak, so it's a cure for a symptom that may not even exist.

I'll also be very clear here that I think the car has pretty much all the power it needs as it comes from the factory. Other people's opinions vary wildly here, but a car with a chassis this good sending power to the front wheels, it's just a fool's errand in my mind to try to turn this thing into a dyno queen with 500+ horsepower, which is pretty much the only reason you'd need to upgrade the intercooler. SO many better ways to spend money; I'd point you right towards an RS3 if that's your goal. Or plenty of other options.

But yes to put a bow on this topic, there is plenty of anecdotal evidence of the PRL actually blocking air reaching the radiator, which leads to overheating in track usage. So to me, just the possibility of paying $1500+ install costs/effort for it to potentially ruin a track day is not even worth considering whatever potential benefits a couple degrees of cooler IATs might bring.

FL5 forums are filled with reports from users that the PRL IC caused cooling issues, because it has a significant negative impact on flow through the radiator, which is responsible for both water and oil cooling.

Thank you for responses I think I will go ahead and order the high volume intake and inlet pip kit and not worry about the others. 🙌

Just updating here - had the intake and inlet pipe kit installed and happy with it. Windows up especially in 3rd gear onward you can hear a nice "whoosh" induction noise.
