I should love the new Z. I was brought home from the hospital as a newborn in a 260z which we had for decades. However, as beautiful looking and nice sounding as it was, my G35 Coupe was a tremendous disappointment due to a horrible clutch/transmission combo, in addition to a battery drain that often led to towing instead of driving! I tested the new Z when they came out and again the transmission and clutch feel were underwhelming, with worse steering than my Integra. I decided to pass. It's a shame, since I love the looks of the new Z and think it is very fitting for the heritage of that line. The Nissan dealers around here are also less than optimal.

I'm not sure the Supra which is going away, would be the favorite for everyone against the upcoming Nismo with a manual transmission.

Has a lot more going for it. No weird piston skirt issues, actually handles very damn well out of the box too. The zf8 is remarkable. The manual is good. Not great. Good

the Supra kinda comes off like it has its shit together. Where as the z needs money to perform as good as the Supra. And even more money to out perform a STOCK mk5 Supra

I know folks who were born and taken home in a Datsun/nissan. That love runs deep. I get that. Just a damn shame the mustang gt and mk5 Supra have their shit together and the z really doesn’t.

plus personally, the supra is just a better looking car...the new Z does nothing for me.

I agree with U. The Supra is UWU af

but I didn’t want to bring that up. Looks being subjective and all.
As good as it looks on the outside, the view from the inside is terrible. The visibility is horrifically bad. Not just blindspots and peripherals, etc. -- even straight ahead. I love small cars, but I felt very uncomfortable driving the Supra. It was like peering out of a bunker, and I did not have a good sense of my surroundings.

That wouldn’t even bother me at all. I’ve owned worse. To be fair tho I only drive 100-300 miles a month. I can see why that would be a downer for some folks tho

Are you sure you've owned worse? I thought the same thing until I drove one. The top of the windshield was nearly below my eye level, lmao (roof has "scoops" to create head room).

God yes. Camaro ss, wife had an fj cruiser and a murano too, ap2 s2k with the fake club hardtop vert delete. And a few others.

if I like a car. And if it’s gonna perform in a way I’d find favorable. I’m willing to over look a few things here and there. Pretty sure a lot of people would share that sentiment too. Not everyone but at least a good chunk of folks

I get that U fuck with the z. That’s fine bro. It’s ok to like it. I just see it as a compromised half baked vehicle. Hopefully the next one gets a better budget.

In my experience, Supra visibility is worse than an S2k hardtop or an SS. I can't speak to the FJ or Murano comparisons.

And, I agree: most of us are more than willing to overlook a vehicle's flaws in appreciation for their assets (in fact, I'd argue that their flaws are often the things that give them the unique character that makes people fall for them).

I am not hating on the Supra, and I don't "fuck with the Z", either. My first comment in this thread was in support to taking the Supra over the Z, and I'd do that without a second thought. But, I'm not going to pretend that the Z doesn't have *some* elements working for it -- even if it's based on a nearly two decade old platform and seems largely mailed-in -- or that the Supra doesn't have *some* elements working against it.

Supras biggest weakness should be the macpherson front. But somehow, even at a high level. It somehow doesn’t become a problem. I dunno if it was Toyota or bmw that dialed that in but holy crap. I’m sure the tq vectoring diff in the rear helps alleviate front compression some during yaw but wow.

I had an ion redline. Because I loved the LSJ motor and found gm’s version of a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder to be superior than a k20 in terms of engineering and flat out ability to take monstrous amounts of abuse

I dunno if U ever sat in a Saturn ion redline but that interior and that stereo were absolutely fucked šŸ˜‚ I can overlook a lot but not brake or suspension performance

The mcstrut limitation does become apparent once a proper tire is used. That's true for the z too. Both cars are tuned relatively the same as far as alignment for street use. If you go for true track use, the alignment needs tackled in both platforms, but how you address it becomes a little different.

I think people forget the z platform was rock solid when it came out.... So why bother changing too much? They added power and made it shorter like lunatics, but somehow maintained a near perfect chassis balance, especially on breakaway smoothness. The 370 platform is very capable (I should know since I have a race car 370 scattered across two states and 3 garages right now) and incredibly reliable. They added power again and so they made it more rigid again. Nothing they've done is a bad recipe, just executed more as a grand touring car rather than a sports car.

Where it goes wrong for me is the move to turbo and the price. I believe they made some concessions for easy power and I don't like how the power is delivered now. It ruins the balance of the chassis. In contrast the BMW engine in the supra is by far the best thing about it... It's linear and smooth like an NA.

Let's just be happy we have sub 70k options for sports cars that are capable of 1.02G from a dealer lot and still offer a manual. I'd take either, or the m2. I just wouldn't take a camaro... Can't get a helmet through the "window"

I get that but a hair extra negative camber goes down well on the Supra. I assume the same on the z?

but yeah. Options are good at least. Honestly I’d do (and probably regret) an nd3 before a z

I personally liked the 370 too. That second throttle body went far šŸ˜‚ and the manual felt decent and was only a couple dollars away from feeling like a great manual.

I actually understand their choice of motor. There must’ve been tons of pressure to go with a boosted power plant. Would’ve been great to see an updated 3.7.
