My buddy really want to get his FL5 to sound like our DE5. I'm here wanting the the volume to be one notch louder with a Two Step Performance downpipe which is stupid hard to get in California 🤧

Part of the reason the integra sounds different , when in sport plus and the vehicle is warm the ECU adjusts parameters to give you the pops and bangs. Good video

This is entirely possible through the valving on the exhaust alone, which is what I suspect is really going on.

Could be , but the service tech at Acura stated that it sports plus the ECU adjust parameters on the release of the throttle after the vehicle is warmed up this is where the pops come from. So I’m not sure

My little 1.5 pops and burbles in all drive modes and all I changed was the exhaust. No engine mods whatsoever. No tune no downpipe. Therefore I'm convinced the drive modes do nothing to the engine map and you're getting the soundtrack simply by bypassing a resonator.

The 1.5 and the 2.0 are totally different, the pops and bangs are way more pronounced in the ITS sports plus mode (only happens when the vehicle is warm which would indicate a ECU controlling the pops and bangs). I get what you're saying with the valve , what the Acura tech said makes sense as well, usually pops and bangs come from extra fuel and timing.

They're not that dissimilar, still just four-pot turbos. The pops are louder in S+ because the valve is open. Every small turbo out there would be popping off if it had the same treatment. Pops only happen when it's warm for me too, no ecu magic needed for that.

I was wrong about the mapping being different in sport modes since the throttle map is different, but I highly doubt any automaker can afford to do anything that affects fuel consumption just for a couple pops on throttle lift.

EPA on the DE5 is 1mpg lower than the FL5.. that's for the pops and bangs. 😉

We'll yeah it's a different tune for more power. It's also one less resonator and an open exhaust at all rpms. This ain't the rocket surgery you're all making it out to be.

I've also been told the tune is necessary for pops and bangs. I'm sure one of the tuners in here could verify. Now on my previous car, and aftermarket exhaust created some burbling after throttle lift, but definitely no explosions to create the sound we're experiencing.

My son's GTI has ferocious pops and bangs with an ecu tune, and none without. He's running a straight pipe set up, with downpipe, high-flow cat, etc.

That being said, are there two ways to get actual pops and bangs?

There's been some good theories and sound explanations. Acura has been mum on how they engineered it. I suppose for good reason to keep their secret sauce for making a 4CYL vehicle and exhaust sounds so damn good stock.

As someone who toggles between both sport and sports+ and it being night and day difference between the two I think it has to do with the mapping. It's not a scientific test by any means.

I had to get a tune for my WRX and BRZ to get the most popcorn effect but it seemed kinda forced.
The integra has that someone force feel but not as exaggerate.

My 2nd Gen NSX has a downpipe and tune but it doesn't seem force and real
