I wanted a winter tire setup that:
  • Looks similar-ish to the OEM wheels.
  • Has durability comparable to an OEM wheel.
  • Uses 18" wheels in order to get a little more meat in the sidewall.
  • Keeps the speedometer accurate.
  • Doesn't "poke" since this is just a good way to cover the side of the car in salt spray and grime.
  • Is significantly narrower than the OEM summer setup in order to improve hydroplane resistance.
  • Is generally safe and effective in harsh winter weather.
That last bit is the most important.

Things I didn't care about in the slightest:
  • Aggressive fitment.
  • Impressing the ladies.
So that said, there are just not a ton of options that meet all these needs with our 5x120 bolt pattern. @MoppyChoppy figured out that OEM 2009 Acura TL wheels are just about perfect, but this helpful advice arrived right after I had already ordered these wheels. šŸ˜†

One of the counterintuitive things about offset is that maintaining the same offset between different width wheels keeps the center of the wheel in the same spot, not the face of the wheel. I wanted a similar amount of poke to the OEM 19x9.5 wheels, and when you drop 1.5" of width, you can compensate by dropping ~19mm of offset. So a notional 18x8 wheel that has identical "poke" to a 19x9.5 +60 OEM wheel would have a 41mm offset.

The 18x8 +44 BBS SR wheels were very close to that notional perfect size, and they would allow me to meet the rest of my criteria as well.

The vendor for these told me that I would need to run a minimum of a 3mm spacer in order to clear the front brakes. When they arrived, I found that to not be true, the wheels spun freely and did not contact the brake caliper, but only just. It seemed to me like the combination of the short hub on the front brake rotors and the design of the BBS "PFS" hub centric rings would not allow for a wheel to be hub centric with a 3mm spacer, so I ended up buying 2mm spacers from a company called "Caold Technology" out of Australia. They are nothing fancy, and they fit and work just fine without vibrations. My reference for how much brake caliper clearance is enough is a 2024 Mercedes GLE63 AMG S - Merc gives you roughly 1/8" with the OEM setup. I know some people want to see something closer to 1/4" or even 1/2", but if it's good enough for Mercedes it's good enough for me I guess. These 2mm spacers get me into that range.

As far as tires, I've been running Blizzaks forever and decided to change it up this time around and went with Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5's. We will see if they live up to the hype.

225/40R18 gets me really close in revs/mile to the OE Michelins (826 revs/mile for the Nokians vs 822 for the Michelins.) That will keep the speedometer reading correctly and dropping down from 265 to 225 will do wonders for hydroplane resistance on slushy roads.

The car is very dirty in these pics, but the white hides most of that. My dog is a window licker, don't mind the rear windows. 😁

I love my Hakka's. Just got my R5's on for Winter. I would recommend them over any other Winter Tire!

Hey thanks for tagging me! I wanted to see what they look like.

Looks pretty good! I'll be installing my winter setup this week too!

Just took these on a 1200 mile road trip and no issues. The Nokians are nice and quiet, I know that was one of the complaints about their prior models. No snow so can't speak to that yet.

One thing I gotta say about the BBS wheels is that the lug seats must be very solid. With most aftermarket aluminum wheels - the first time you install them at least - it'll be absolutely mandatory to re-torque after ten miles or so. The smaller surface area of the cone seat on tuner lugs exacerbates this a bit, I would guess. The lugs will loosen quite a bit in just a short amount of driving. The aluminum of the lug seat just needs to take a "set" and then each time you re-install the wheels, the problem is diminished. I have run into this time and time again.

The BBS took zero additional torque after being driven for 10, then 30, then 1200 miles. Not a single lug turned more. Impressive.

Hey @Spart !

Finally had the chance to take a picture of my car with the TL wheels. Since you shared your setup, here's mine!

Ya know, that's not such a bad look on this car for being 16 year old OEM wheels.

Finally had the opportunity to drive on these in the snow and was not let down. We got about six inches give or take. Observations:
  • The Nokians are really impressive with grip from a standing start. I picked a few tricky spots to deliberately put myself in where there’s a stop sign on a hill, and had no issue getting going.
  • I also deliberately left my driveway (which is uphill) unplowed and the Acura wasn’t phased. This is the limit of fresh snow it can probably deal with before the splitter turns into a makeshift plow though.
  • The Acura with FWD and Nokians is generally more confident than my Tacoma in RWD and Blizzaks. It stops better, turns better, goes better.
  • The Tacoma in 4WD with Blizzaks is basically cheating but the Acura isn’t comically worse. The Tacoma stops about the same as the Acura does, something about 4WD with a locked center diff improves snow braking performance.
  • This car is really fun to drive in the snow and it turned me into a bit of a hooligan, but damn do I miss having a handbrake. The last FWD car I had was a 2010 JCW Mini, and that car was also a riot on snow tires. But you could get it sideways with the hand brake, which was a big part of the fun.

Are you running stock studs or extended for those spacers?

I'm running stock studs. I counted 7-8 threads of engagement.
5/16s the absolute limit on spacer size you would run on stock studs? I wonder if the ITS has the same thread length as the A Spec. I’m unable to take the wheel off my car and haven’t been able to get measurements on my Aspecs studs.

So a lot of this will depend on how deep the lug seat is cut on the particular wheel you're installing.

Wheels vary quite a bit in how thick that mounting pad is, and how deep the lug seats are drilled.
