OEM Coolant

On the back of my expansion tank failing and ordering the PRL one (comes in today woot) I just wanted to verify that this coolant listed on Amazon is indeed the correct OEM coolant that would have come with the car and be what the dealerships use. Honda Genuine Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2, 50/50 Pre-Diluted, 1 Gallon

If that's not what i need, where is the best place to get it?

Also, i need to pick up some of those hose pinch pliers- taking recommendations for those too.. They're all over amazon but they look like the absolute cheapest plastic junk you can buy and a lot of them have bad reviews saying they don't clamp enough to keep fluids from leaking through anyway. some companies make steel ones but they're a bit more expensive. I'm okay with that as long as they work properly lol.

sweet. i got my tank today but the coolant is not coming in until sunday. in the meantime i still need to get some pinch off pliers. the lowes and home depots around me dont really have shit for them so it looks like i'm gonna have to get them off amazon as well lol

Do you have a northern tool nearby? I feel like they're a "higher end harbor freight"...

I got a decent kit of hose tools there, including the locking crimp pliers and hose picks. I highly recommend a set of hose picks! They have so many uses you don't think of until you have them.

theres a couple of them in my area; one of them is sorta close by. i'm in more of a "tractor supply" area lol

funnily enough im actually in the process of having a garage built. it's like 75% done but they had to stop because of all the snow and cold weather bullshit. im thinking i'm gonna epoxy the floor so oil and shit won't soak into the concrete

Epoxy can be great! I've had good and bad luck with it. Sometimes it's solid and sometimes it rips off with duct tape sticking to it .

Have you considered the elevated drain tile approach? With snow, those are actually quite nice. Ideally I'd put them on top of an epoxied floor, but I'd take them either way. I personally haven't had time to get to them yet, but they're on the list.

Floor prep is key for epoxy, even with new concrete pour. Acid edge, dry it, clean it, coat it. Lot of info out there for DIY or you hire a pro.

Been near 10 years since I did my new garage, the EpoxyCoat is still doing its thing. Only the expansion cracks had a bit of chipping. I cleaned/etched my other garage that was 15y old concrete and used a quality BenMoore industrial epoxy and that has held up nicely as well. I would have used it in the new garage, but at the time it had been discontinued.

Coming up on 2 years now, guess I need to start looking for expansion tank failures?

i'm gonna have the contractor who's building the garage do it; my family has known him forever and he does good work. he said he'd do it if i went and bought the epoxy. i was just gonna go up to the local lowes and get a bucket of the generic medium grey. are there any brands i should particulary look for, and avoid? lowes has rustoleum, gorilla, valspar, armor, and magic resin. i don't really have any preference i was probably gonna pick up the rustoleum.

also, about the expansion tank- while i've had my car for 2 years now, it still has less than 15K miles on it, which is why i'm so particularly annoyed by the shit happening lol

Did it actually crack and spill or is it evap dumping from the drain like intended?

it cracked along the same seam that everyone elses' does and had leaked out enough fluid for the heater to stop working.

they took pictures of it but i dont have them. it looked just like the other photos of all the other tanks that have failed at the same seam and had the coolant seep out all over the side of the tank and all the surrounding mounting points, etc.

When the car was off was the tank empty or below the min?

A lot of the photos of "I have the leak" that I've seen have been around the purge area. First 2k miles of the car I would get occasionally fluid there, mostly evaporated. On track it hasn't been uncommon to get a little seeping once things get really hot. It's gotten better with water wetter since there's less localized boiling/expansion. That's just the purge dumping when the max is exceeded or you're doing 1.2G+ on left turn in.

I haven't had a heater issue though. I wonder why some seem to be fine and others seem to explode...? I would think my car should be more prone to issues since I spend 20-40 mins at a time largely at WOT in 85F+ ambient, but it hasn't been an issue yet.

Time for someone to be the class action kickstarter...?

the expansion tank was completely empty both with the car off and after driving it for 30 minutes to the dealership, apparently. i didn't personally check because i didn't think the 2 things were related; i figured some thermostat or sensor had gone bad.

the fluid seeped out through the seam where the 2 injection-molded plastic pieces are joined together. its not from the purge area, its from a faulty seam that goes bad. they diagnosed this correctly without even knowing about the widespread tank issue. the tech i talked to told me when they troubleshoot a heater issue, the first thing they check for is a bad smell (i'm guessing a burnt fuse/electronics) and then they check coolant, and he said as soon as they saw the expansion tank they could see that it was fucked. they replaced it with a new one, topped it off, and lo and behold my heater works again lol.

ive got my PRL one sitting here, just waiting for the coolant + hose pliers to come in tomorrow so i can put this behind me

i dont know about a class action lawsuit, considering they'll replace it for free under warranty, though i suspect there will be more grounds for one when someone inevitably leaks enough coolant out to overheat their engine and blow a head gasket and whatever else, to which i imagine acura will go "no that's not our fault, we aren't covering that." i could care less about a class action lawsuit, as all that does is make some law firm rich- i'm just not gonna give honda my money anymore, if this is the quality i can expect from them.

Yeah that's fair. Sounds like the loss was extreme.

The vw/audi thermostat housing issue has seen about 20 part iterations in ten years and the last class action I got a notice they'd cover the cost of parts and labor, even if you went outside the dealer to purchase and repair.

I filed and gave them my receipts for the parts, then wrote up a justification for my personal time spent at my consulting labor rate. It's a 4 hr book job (took me nearly 14 hrs ), and given the mileage they were willing to pay back 70%. I got a check for 1100$ and since I bought the part from fcpeuro any future replacement they refund the cost when you ship back the failed part.

I still lost money on it, but the class action results were helpful.

If I were you, I'd shelf the prl tank and see how far you get. Make them fix it if it fails again. They're like children... they don't learn when you fix it for them. But that's just my viewpoint
