Front and back rotors. What the hell is up with these prices from the dealer.

So I was told by the Acura dealership while doing oil change and the recall for the direction that my discs are a bit damaged (pads stamped on it, probably from not moving for a month at the dealership I bought the car a year ago...) which can shake sometimes when I break (very barely noticeable).

So he said you might consider replacing them if it shakes too much at some point. I'm only at 8k miles, thats just crazy... So anyway I ask what's the price just for fun and he said it should be around 750$CAD for the front (pair) and so he looked at the price list and after chocking on his coffee he says well it's actually 1'200$ (CAD) EACH for the front and I think it was around 350 each for the back. He was as much surprised as I was.

Am I right to think there was a bug in his price list? I'm not going to change the rotors unless I have good reason but holy cow that price makes no sense or is it just me?

Plz excuse my engrish, I'm french : )

Don't buy rotors from Honda. They are cheaply made (will often warp) and they are pricey.

Look for something else.

Someone on the Civic forums ordered the rears from Disc Brake Canada and was happy with them for street use. Might try this as I'm also from Canada (and speak French).

I'm jealous of your bilingualism, and working on joining you in that state. Don't apologize for being smarter than most people.

As for the brakes, yeah fuck that. Look elsewhere. I just got fleeced for paying for rear brakes on my son's 2013 Civic Ex, came out to ~$1300 if I recall correctly. I was kind of stuck, I had no time to do them myself nor explore other options. But that's about $1000 than it should be IMHO, and yes I imagine the front rotors for our cars are "special" and cost far more than typical Honda parts.

If it's close enough, consider upgrading to one of the several big brake kits that receive high marks for this platform. To hell with paying that much for brakes on a 1 year old car with 8k miles on it...

Drive a Porsche for a few years and you will have a different perspective of dealer prices!
One option would be to keep the front hats and transfer to new rotors. There is a bit of labor involved that needs to be done right, but you could save some money.
From your post, I'm not sure that you need new rotors. You might first do a good bedding exercise and see if that clears it up.

I would do a good bedding process first. If you're not tracking the car your rotors should last for years.

You can get replacement rings from paragon, that fit the OEM hats, or even just get a set of Paragon two piece rotors for less. In the states it's $800 for both fronts I believe. I also don't think Honda even sells the replacement rings, just the whole two piece set up.

lastly, try Rock auto. i just got a whole set of rotors for the car (all four) for $208 including shipping and tax! Not two piece, but who cares.

Funny that you mention RockAuto, I just heard about them from a friend after I told him the story. He directed me to much cheaper parts on this website.

Thanks!

I did just that, was still shocked at how much rear brakes cost on a Civic.

But no, to your point, they're not tungsten carbide like they are on my Macan.

FUCK I just found out how much those damn things will be! I did not realize they'd be nearly as much as ceramics.

$4200. They're $4200 for anyone who's asking.

I'm sorry if I'm not following. I admit that I'm having my second bourbon. Are you say that the estimate for a rear brake job on a Civic was $4,200?

Yeah I'm crossing posts- I was just shocked that the front rotors on my Macan are $4200 (on sale); I had posted earlier that I paid $1300 including labor for rear brakes on my son's Civic- which is also more than I expected. Your comment about Porsche ownership sent me down the path of the Macan, but I've owned several other Porsches. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on perspective...) not long enough for them to need brakes but I got the gist of it.

I knew they were expensive but I wasn't aware of the actual cost, now that I know they may as well be carbon ceramic. They're the Porsche Surface-Coated Brakes (PSCB), which as I understand it are iron rotors coated in tungsten carbide. I'll admit they haven't shown much brake dust on the gloss black wheels and have outstanding brake feel for a 4400 lb SUV, but they make a lot of noise especially in colder weather. Dealer says it's normal; I've tried multiple times to get them to deal with it... anyway. I'm just finding all this out about the cost sorry for the rambling.

If you go the Rock Auto route, search on the Internet for a discount code. Should be easy to get a 5 % rebate code.

As for the OE rotors, mine a shaking a bit too after 2 years and 20k km. I think it's pad material that will transfer on the rotor when it is rainy/humid and I don't use the car often.

Another option in Canada is MAX brakes, Super cheap...but in the past, my own experience was hit or miss. I bought rotors from them that lasted, and others that didn't. Will pass next time... But still super cheap.

Doesn't help much here, but on my old 17 ilx the headlights were still like 800 or 900 a pop. Didn't make any sense at all.
