Reverse Barrel Fitment Warning

Hi guys,

I recently tried to install some Work VS-XX three piece wheels specs 5x120, 18x9.5 +23. I have learned that they do not clear the break calipers and will sit on the ball joints as it is a reverse barrel. Just wanted to share this so someone else does not make the same mistake! I was told 19s should have no issues and it is possible that 18s would fit with a stepped barrel.

I’m on my third set of Work VS-XX (over 3 cars), so let me chime in.

While offset and width are obviously important, you also need to be aware of the face type (disk type). This will determine the amount of brake clearance you will have. However, more brake clearance you have, the less lip you will have. It’s a trade off when trying to spec out your 3-piece wheels. Reverse barrel or regular barrel shouldn’t affect the specs.

In the case of my A-Spec, I was able to obtain a template to help me determine if getting O-Disk (biggest lip) was right for me, and it was a perfect fit (literally fit 2 credit cards between spoke and brake). I’m running 19x9 +33 with a step lip.

In the case of your Type-S, getting an R-Disk in the front and O-Disk in the rear would have worked. Or you could have gone square setup with R-Disk to allow for full wheel rotation.


With that said, what disk type did you get? Also, a 9.5 would brobably sit better with an offset of mid to low 30s.

FYI reverse mounting the face will lower the offset of the wheels by 8mm-15mm.

Truthfully, I don’t really understand offset still. But the issue is the barrel shrinking near the end, aka the reverse barrel style. Just wanted to share.

Right, I see what you mean now. I thought you were only referring to the face of the brake caliper hitting the back of the wheel spokes.

It’s likely you could have gone 18” and step lip with the proper disk type and had no issues. Or just step up to 19 if you really wanted a reverse barrel setup.

+23 just seems like a LUDICROUS offset for these cars, coming from the factory at +60.

That's all I'll say because I've already hit my "wet blanket" quota for the month...

What width tires are you running, and is there any rubbing?

zero rubbing…even with 4 people in car.
