Best Type S exhaust mods that don't drone

Generally stick to downpipes alone as they provide the power I need with a little rasp, but also see front pipes, throwing that equation for a loop, and then figure a good exhaust with the right combo means you cruise on the highway without it droning (5th or 6th gear around 70-80ish)

Now I'm currently doing my hw and throwing it to you guys, what would you recommend to make it sound good and provide power, but also avoid droning (or if there is, something minimal you only here during a silent ride)

With my 3 modded turbo 4bangers, I was satisfied with just the downpipe, but the B7’m Audis would drone with catbacks.

Downpipes are fine for cruising, curious how the front pipe would be, and if I combined different brands for a full system, what wouldnt be so intrusive

I’ve never measured any gains with a front pipe upgrade on any of the 1.5T or 2.0T platforms. However most 2.0T “catbacks” include a nice front pipe with them.

As mentioned above, drone is subjective. My Apexi exhaust matched with TSP down pipe and PRL front pipe is fairly conservative when comparing to something like AWE.

Maintaining the valve is a good way to reduce most of the drone, but I still get some drone near 3k on the highway in Comfort. It's nothing I can't live with but certainly louder than the stock exhaust.

The stock exhaust with a down pipe is a good setup. I went with Apexi for 2 reasons:

1. I wanted a dual tip exhaust
2. Apexi is the only system (which I've heard) that removes most of the rasp

I have a Borla and agree with @bisquick that valve retention is key. I have the Borla though (actually 1st) and there is zero drone or rasp on comfort mode. It's very quiet at comfort mode actually, I'd say right between stock comfort and stock sport.

I get a tiny bit of drone if I'm in too low of a gear on sport/sport+ but that just tells me to upshift.

Granted, I do not have a downpipe because I'm in CA and I haven't fully committed to that idea yet.
