Hey guys, I’ve only had my Integra a couple weeks. I’ve noticed when shifting from 1-2, there’s a noticeably louder noise in the actual transmission, not shifter grinding I’m talking about, than in other gears. Anyone else experience this? Not talking about what usually people bring up about 2nd gear. I’m very familiar, and own an 06 Rsx type S as well. The stock shifter in the Integra is super nice. But this is like a sound in actual trans, doesn’t necessarily sound bad, just louder and more noticeable than other gears? Also only notice on 1-2 up shifts and not from going 2-1

ASpec or Type-S? I have ASpec and have gotten a seemingly random ‘clunk’ or ‘thump’ I couldnt explain while cruising around a parking lot going 1st to 2nd. Hasn’t happened since but car was like a week old at that point. Not sure if it was trans either; could’ve been suspension up front

Ok. I was thinking I heard something else at one point too; maybe sounded like a loud activation of the gears at the shifter cable connection point. Was going to upgrade to spherical bushings at some point to see if it made the noises better (albeit louder when selecting gears) but smoother and more affirming.

Yeah like it doesn’t really sound bad, or wrong. Just wanted to know if other people experienced as well, just like a louder engagement in the actual trans going from 1-2 than other gears.

Can you replicate it while car is off and rowing through the gears? I’ve gotten some louder linkage noises while sitting still than in motion but yeah like you said not too concerning, just very mechanical sounding. I’d say if it’s consistent and barring any grinds or jerks etc it may just be a quirk of the car. Under harder acceleration you may be getting some engine rock as well. I want to switch out the RMM and try a stiffer one I feel as though the OEM is too soft and engine moves too much. And I’ve never launched the car; just experienced on quicker get ups from 1st to 2nd

Good question about when the car is off, I’ll check. And yeah it doesn’t really seem like a sound that’s wrong or damaging, and it is consistent with slow speeds going from 1-2. Can’t tell if I have music on, but spent first week in car not enjoying the wonderful sound system, so I could hear the actual car hahaha

Yeah the system in there is so nice, especially when you dial it in to your liking. I did the same thing so I could get a feel for how the car revs and to make any mistakes in my shifting or potential mechanical issues more apparent.
I’ll do some slower 1-2 shifts this afternoon after work and see if I can replicate myself. My thoughts are it’s the linkage at the bushings and possibly even those just breaking in a bit too

Yeah def doesn’t do it with car off. And really I think I would extend where I heard it even more to when the windows are down. It’s just like a stronger engagement, doesn’t sound wrong really, just louder. I’m guessing it’s linkage related as well. Also maybe because I’m used to second/ 3rd gear grinds in the Rsx and learning how to drive that, but not having any issues with grinding gears in this transmission.

The plot thickens.. I’d say sit on it for a little bit and see if it eases up or if it may just be the way it is without any harm being done. Save the manuals!

the subtle clunk is totally normal. usually only notice it at low speeds/RPMs. someone on another forum said it was the countershaft and just the way these gearboxes are designed. nothing harmful going on.

Thanks for the reply! I was actually going to say I don’t hear the same clunk when I shift from 1-2 at a higher rpm like 3k or above. Happens at lower rpm’s and shifting from 1-2 early.

i think it also might have something to do with the thin MTF these gearboxes use. so not as much cushion like some older gearboxes that use 90 weight MTFs. could also be the LSD too, not sure

I tried Torco MTF based on some recommendations but it didn't like it. seemed to slippery for the synchros and the LSD made a groaning noise on full-lock tight turns. Guess they reformulated it from GL4 to GL5. Kind of afraid to try anything else after that because it took several drain/fills to get it back to normal.

But I've been curious about trying a thicker MTF to see if it would help the clunk.
