You could certainly do that if you want a flap constantly poking out of the front. It would scratch up the bumper fairly quickly and wear it down a lot after time. I prefer something to thread in only when necessary since this is just a street car that sees track time 6-10 weekends per year. My other car gets permanent mounting because it's not a street car...

I guess you could shove it back through the grill when not needed, but the fabric hooks would still damage the bumper/grill with any towing done with them because they're flexible.

Fair enough, I guess if the concern is scratches then it might be possible to bolt it in from the bottom of the beam instead. That way you'd mainly be scratching up the black plastic trim and not the painted surfaces. Still would be a permanent flap sticking out though.

Looks like for this year's Pikes Peak car they did the same thing as your original suggestion with a Rennline tow hook:

Yep that style makes sense. I'd still prefer to weld on a threaded mount below. There's lots of room in the open section below the bumper for a screw in hard mount.

The fabric flap ones suck in my experience. They're a few uses and done at best. Ideally you want something you can grab and lug it onto a trailer with. Sucks having off track excursions in a car you drove to the track. Anything over 2hrs away (where my wife or a friend can't come to get me) I just trailer it, even if it's the street car.

Also, what you could do in the mean time is buy a fabric tether strap for cheap at the home depot racing and make your own y strap that hooks to the factory hook points under the car. Then if you really needed it, just pull it out of the glove box and hand to the tow truck guy. Not quite as fast, but certainly workable.
