After finishing a round of golf at my local golf course at around 0920 I discovered my front driver door handle area have scratches and a very deep dent right above the door handle. At first I thought someone walking by with a golf bag hit my door. Then I looked deeper there was also signs of damage inside the area when you pull the door handle out. It became clear that someone was using a prying tool trying to break into my car. The door handle to the door panel now has a gap. The rubber gasket is deformed which means it will not be water tight. This does not appear to be just a paint job.

I have since sent an email to the GM of the course to see if I can file a claim through the course's insurance. In the mean time I have decided to file a claim through my own insurance USAA. My deductible is $500. I am sure this damage will cost more that $500. Anyone in the insurance industry have any insight as to the cost of this repair.

That sucks.

I hope for the person that did it, the worst possible thing that can happen to them happens to them.

But yes, that'll easily extend beyond your deductible. Nothing on cars anymore is ever reasonably affordable.

Wow that sucks. Sorry to see that. Surprised they tried to break into the car like that, it is an old school method. They couldn't steal the car itself, there must have been something inside the car they wanted.

Get some paint on there immediately, the exposed metal will turn to rust in about a week (weather dependent). Fold paper into a point and spray the tip with rust reformer, then you can use it like a pen and draw/fill over the metal until it can be repaired proper like.

That sucks so bad. You'd think they would have better security at a golf course... Sad to see this in my top topics e-mail today. Hope ya get everything worked out!

Hopefully they have cameras and can track the perp.
As far as filing a claim with the course management, unless your car was in a valet where they possess your keys, then technically they are not responsible for any damage.
That being said, if you go there often and spend alot of coin, they might offer to pay for some of the damages rather than risk losing a good customer.

Good luck, i hope they catch the guy. I had almost the exact thing happen to me, but they did $1800 worth of damage to my door all because of some change in my cupholder.

I have some updates. The general manager actually replied to my email yesterday. He said he will review the security video today as he was off yesterday. I understand the possibility of a successful claim against the course insurance is slim. However apparently there are history of break ins in that course parking lot after doing some research. So the argument will be if the course knowingly aware of this situation why it has not provide security.

The only thing in my car that was visible was a full size wheel/tire in behind the driver seat. It has a cover. But who would want to steal a wheel and tire. Maybe the person did not know what it was.

I actually filed a claim with my insurance, USAA yesterday. It was a seamless process. I stopped by the body shop yesterday and it already has all the information to start the process of repair. The shop also got the rental car to pick me up. Very convenient.

Apparently this repair is more involved than I envisioned. The lock and all associated parts will have to be replaced. The new lock will need to be programed to work with my existing key fob. The painting part was interesting. The driver side rear door will also need to be partially painted to "blend" in. All comes to $2,033. I have a $500 deductible. The car will be ready by this Friday.

My hope is the golf course will at least reimburse me the $500 deductible. Will see........
