Hello all,

I purchased my 25 ITS in March. I had been test-driving different ITS's on offer all day. So when I finally found the Performance Red at a dealer and decided that color was what I wanted to go with. I opted not to test-drive it, as all those prior that day (even used) were the same; I experienced no issues.

That was a dumb decision on my part. On the drive home, when I got on it a bit in 2nd gear, the car sounded like it was shaking apart. I ended up bringing the car back and the dealership service department tracked down the noise as being a faulty air box assembly that was basically falling apart. So they had to fully remove the dash to install a new airbox assembly.

Since then, I've experienced an intermittent rattle and/or tick noise from the dash. It doesn't always happen, but when it does, it usually persists. When my wife is the passenger, she hears it too, but describes it as a "rubbing" noise, which I don't understand, because we are clearly hearing the same noise at the same times, but hear it entirely different.

If my wife puts her hand on the front piece of the dash (the one that looks like it's leather-wrapped) and applies just a small amount of pressure, the noise usually relents. The same tactic can also be done on the piece above it (the plastic piece that looks like carbon-fiber, but isn't, and entails the vents and climate controls), around the same area, and there too the noise usually stops.

The two areas I've squared in red are where applying pressure seems to mitigate the sound.

With that knowledge, I have disassembled those parts from the dash numerous times now attempting to locate the cause. I have not been successful. I take great care dissembling, use the proper plastic shivs/pry tools, and just generally try my best to avoid introducing new issues. Plus, I have lots of experience in doing this type of thing on past vehicles without issue.

While I haven't been able to definitively determine the cause, I have taken precautionary steps to help mitigate noise. I have:

  • Felt-covered all mounting points (where tabs pass through)
  • Felt-cushioned all possible areas of plastic-to-plastic contact
  • Epoxied the plastic parts together that make up the front piece (leather-wrapped), as it's actually not a single piece, but multiple joined together to form a single unit, and the joints when flexed, did make noise
  • Since being epoxied, flexing the unit creates no noise
  • I've applied butyl rubber to the backs of both pieces
  • I found some loose plastic parts, where the glove box latches insert and retract from, that easily jiggled and created noise, and applied adhesive butyl rubber to the back of them and could not further get them to rattle.
  • Everything still fits well and goes back together well and firmly, and feels sound

Yet, the issue still seems to remain and still it seems to be quelled by applying slight pressure to either of those pieces. I'm at a loss as to what to try next.

I wish this didn't bother me, but it very much does. Driving around hearing that is grating. I've had much lower quality, much more affordable cars that didn't exhibit this level of annoyance. Or at the very least, not within the first few months of ownership.

Anyway, I realize the rattles are a pretty common complaint with this car. Odd that each person seems to have their own unique sound/cause. Just wondering if anyone has had similar to mine, and if so, what maybe was the fix.

Thanks,

I had a brutal plastic-on-plastic rubbing/binding/rattling sound from day one, which sounded like it was coming from the passenger door or glovebox. I took a bunch of stuff apart, lined pieces with felt, and no joy.

Randomly, I determined that opening the glove box and placing sideways pressure on the open bin (pushing it towards the passenger side) would eliminate the noise. So I removed the glove box bin completely for a week, but still had the noise. Then I worked my way down and removed the lower trim panel under the dash in the passenger footwell (it has the footwell light in it). That was the source, either the panel itself or something else it was rubbing on. Other than losing the footwell light, there is really no reason to have that panel, so I never reinstalled it. I have a feeling it will take a lot of trial and error tinkering to figure out exactly what was rubbing and making the noise, since that panel touches a bunch of stuff.

Thanks for that. I'll try exploring based on your description and see if I can't prove that out. Appreciate the response.

Im having this exact same issue. My gf helped me track it down, and its definitely between that footwell ceiling panel and the left foot panel on the passenger side. Haven't dove into it yet, but when I do, ill try to remember to update this thread.

To the OP, when you remove that trim piece youre pushing on, does it still rattle? The best thing to do to troubleshoot is to remove panels one by one, and then test drive it with someone. If it still rattles, just continue pushing/holding stuff until it stops, and repeat until you find the culprit. I've had multiple dashes out, and finding rattles (and more importantly, preventing them when going back together) can be difficult. Keep us updated. Good luck!
