Documenting my rattles and squeaks, and how I fixed them

Finally tracked down the 4-5k RPM rattle. It was caused by a piece of ducting located in the center console called Duct, Rr. Heater Joint. It connects loosely to Duct Assy., Rr. Heater and Heater Sub-assy (shown in photos below), which caused a rattle in my case.

I fixed the issue by removing the center console and adding adhesive foam to the lower part of the duct joint and the heater sub-assy (see photo below). It was the thinnest size offered at my local hardware store and provides a snug fit.

Found a fix for an intermittent rattle that comes from the driver's footwell. The OBDII port was rattling against its mount because it has a loose fit. I pressed on the 6 tabs holding it in, pushed it out, and added some felt tape around the inside perimeter of the mount hole.

The felt covers the inside face of the hole to take up the extra space between the port and the mount. I was careful to cut the felt not to interfere with the 6 clips/tabs.

Very impressed with the diligence or dedication some have to track down a rattle. Rattles drive me nuts and I still try and locate them but have found contorting my body to get at some areas gets a lot harder as I age.

One of the worst rattles I had came from our 2000 Acura TL in the sunroof area. I sounded like loose change or a small part/item bouncing around when you went over the slightest bump. I kept accusing my two youngsters of putting something small (coin or toy piece) up in the track.

After almost a year of searching I pretty much was resigned to living with it. I took the car in for servicing and the tech asked if I had any other issues - I told him about the rattle and not to spend to much time looking for it (at their high shop rates). Tech smiled and said, "oh this is easy there is a TSB out on that". Ended up being the sunroof seal rubbing against the metal roof where they meet (yeah who would guess that would make a rattle sound vice a squeak). Anyway fix was real high tech - about a 6 inch long piece of clear tape where they meet applied to the metal roof side (tape looked like heavy duty clear plastic shipping type). Never had the rattle again.

Mine had a rattle from the passenger side dash board, it started at 1800 RPM to 2200 RPM. After dismantling almost all of the pass side dashboard and finally checking with a mechanics stethoscope, the rattle was coming from the windshield washer reservoir cap.

The rattles that travel like that are frustrating, but fairly common.

Did you replace the cap or add bulk somewhere to stop movement?

Never cease to amaze me how rattles/noises "travel" or seem to come from one area but end up being caused from somewhere else. I had one I swore was on the passenger side and sounded like a seatbelt/seatbelt connection issue. Ended up being the way one of my sunglass cases sat in the overhead holder - switched out for a slightly smaller case and no more rattles. This one only had me searching a couple of weeks.

My favorite sunglasses would rattle incessantly in the holder. I noticed in my other cars they always had a felt liner or foam liner so I took some leftover aggfoam I had for sound insulation, cut out the shape and pressed it into the lower area. No more rattle!

I'm also considering pulling the door cards and glove box again to add the foam or felt to pockets/inside. They're pretty nice/cheap/fast/light upgrades.

Did you replace the cap or add bulk somewhere to stop movement?

I just put some electrical tape around the filler neck , now the cap snaps on firmly. I also insulated where the filler neck attached to the frame.

I've had a few different garage door openers that have done this. They rattle right in front of your head but it sounds like it could be coming from anywhere!
