Changing from OEM Tires on Type S

If your concern is mainly comfort and sidewall, I would suggest downgrading to an 18" rim. You aren't going to want to run the sizes you mention because of it's impact on gearing above all else. A 275/35 is going to be 5% larger than stock and the 40 is almost 10%.

It's likely you can run a 275/30/19 on the 20mms, I think there are a few CTRs running it. Probably even 285/30. Otherwise, I would recommend stepping down to an 18" so you can maintain closer to stock gearing. Check the CTR forums as they have more users experimenting with spacer and tire size. But you will want to stick to the 30 profiles. A local shop won't know if it clears, you will either need to talk to owners or reach out to a specialty shop that knows fit and has done a few DE5s/FL5s.

The 30 is the sidewall percent relative to the width. So a 275/30 or 285/30 will have more sidewall. Not huge, but when you are starting with rubber bands every little bit helps more than you would think. As an example, the 285/30s OD is only 1.6% larger, but sidewall size increases 10%.

Yes, that is true, 30% of 275 will be more side wall than 30% of 265, I wonder if you can fit 285 on the stock wheels or not.
maybe a 285/30/19 with 20 mm spacers would add both a little more sidewall and the added width to appear nearly flush.

285s fit on the rim and plenty of CTRs running 285/35/18s on varying drops and offsets. Not sure if I have seen a 20mm but I am sure someone did it. And yes, this will give you even more poke.

Yes, stock rim is 9.5" which is within the range for a 285 install. Also, someone is running 275/35/19 on their CTR so it does fit, not sure it's worth giving up the gearing though.

I have a question related to changiong from the stock tires, I hope the OP doesnt mind.

We have 265/30/19 tires now, I don't know anything about tires, and wheels, off sets, etc.. so I am a bit lost.
What I was hoping to do with my limited understanding of tires is order a slightly wider tire with a little more sidewall.
I was hoping that I could fit a 275/35/19 or even a 275/40/19 on the Type S, along with 20 mm spacers.
I was hoping this combo would sit closer to flush but wouldn't rub, the added side wall would dampen some of the road stuff and offer a little more protection against breaking a wheel in a pothole.
I know that you can use a few different width tires on the stock rims, but how do I calculate if this set up will rub or is that something the tire shop, I deal with will be able to do for me?
When I get to tire calculators they ask a lot of questions about the wheels, like make, brand, off set and I don't have any of that information.
I was really hoping other users might help me make sense of this or maybe others have already done this.

Thanks very much, this is exactly what I was hoping for to be honest, I think 20 mm spacers would work with this set up based on these pics.
If the "35" doesn't adversely affect the car or the gearing in some way then I think this is the ticket, otherwise the 285/30/19 sounds like an option as well.

That could be it, though I made sure to try to keep pressures under control. But like you said, trickier than expected especially on a high speed course. Would you have any concern using these in the future? Think they’re safe since it’s not like the chords are showing

A bit late to the party but in my experience, depending on the day and the temperature (and the car), a tire could pick up way more than 5-7PSI during a session (Start at ~28PSI --> end around 36-39 PSI).

With that said, I am new and I just bought the car (haven't received it yet) so I am not familiar -- does ITS show tire pressure and tire temp somewhere in the display? I think I remember CTR displaying those figures (along with relevant temp displays) in one of the modes when I test drove one, but don't know if ITS does as well.
